January and February on St. Croix

A winter week or a whole month on St. Croix's East End: the weather, the nonstops, the school calendars, the sea, the stars, Presidents' Day week and a Saturday-to-Saturday plan from the villa.

Illustration

In short

  • January and February average about 84°F by day and 71°F at night, with a sea near 80°F, steady trade winds, the clearest skies of the year in January and the driest month in February.
  • Nonstops as scheduled in October 2026: United from Newark on Saturdays, American from Charlotte and Miami, Delta from Atlanta daily and JetBlue from San Juan daily, with American's Chicago nonstop returning on Saturdays from February 13.
  • Presidents' Day is Monday, February 15: New York City, Boston and Detroit schools take the whole week, and Agrifest is listed for the same weekend, February 13 to 15.
  • New moons on January 7 and February 6 bring the darkest nights of the winter for stars and the bioluminescent bay, and humpback whales pass the Virgin Islands from February into April.
  • A month-long stay works well: the villa has high-speed Wi-Fi, a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and long stays are welcome.

The villa

The Cerulean is a five-bedroom oceanfront villa on St. Croix’s East End, with a guest cottage twenty steps from the main house.

  • Sleeps twelve
  • Four en-suite bedrooms in the main house, one in the cottage, plus a loft bed
  • Private beach below the pool deck
  • Chef’s kitchen, outdoor kitchen and fire pit

January and February are the weeks northern families remember from a Caribbean winter. On St. Croix the afternoons settle at about 84°F, the nights stay in the low 70s, the sea holds near 80°F, and the trade wind keeps the veranda cool from breakfast to the last glass of the evening. The holidays are over and the island has gone back to its own pace: a quiet harbor town, a farm fair on Presidents' Day weekend, art walks on the third Thursday, humpback whales passing offshore and clear night skies over the East End. This guide plans those two months from The Cerulean, a five-bedroom oceanfront villa that sleeps twelve, with the flights, the school calendars, the sea, the stars and a Saturday-to-Saturday week you can copy. It also covers a longer stay, because a villa with a full kitchen, fast Wi-Fi and a view like this one suits a month as well as a week.

Why mid-winter suits the island

Mid-winter on St. Croix is a combination of small things that add up. NOAA's long-term averages for the airport put the January high at 84.2°F and the low at 71.2°F, and February at 84.6°F and 71.4°F. January is the clearest month of the year, with the sky clear or mostly clear about four days in five, and February is the driest month in NOAA's record. A family leaving Boston or Chicago lands to a sea that is warmer than any New England beach in August, and to a breeze that makes an 84°F afternoon feel easy.

The island is open and unhurried. The Crucian Christmas Festival ends on January 2, Three Kings Day on January 6 closes the season, and the restaurants, the boat captains, the dive shops and the galleries all run their full winter schedules. The East End beaches are quiet in any month, and a weekday morning in January or February is as peaceful as they get.

It is an easy trip, too. The Virgin Islands are American, so U.S. citizens do not need a passport, the money is the dollar, and most U.S. phone plans work as they do at home. The nonstops from Newark, Charlotte, Atlanta and Miami put a family on the island in the afternoon, and the villa is about half an hour from the airport.

What the days feel like

A January day on the East End begins with a sunrise at about 6:50 am and ends with sunset at about 6:00 pm in the first week, drifting to about 6:20 pm by Presidents' Day. The day grows from a little over 11 hours of daylight on New Year's Day to nearly 11 hours 45 minutes at the end of February, so every week of the winter adds a few more minutes of evening light. St. Croix stays on Atlantic Standard Time all year, which puts the island one hour ahead of New York and two ahead of Chicago until the mainland clocks change in March.

The trade wind is what makes 84°F feel easy. It blows from the east most of the time, and a few times each winter it freshens for a day or two, a spell that locals call the Christmas Winds. The veranda and the pool deck stay comfortable all day. Mornings are the calmest hours on the water, so the snorkel and the boat trip are best early, and the drive, the lunch or the market fit the rest of the day.

Any shower is brief, and February is the driest month of the year. Our month-by-month weather guide has the full table of normals, and the best time to visit guide compares winter with the other seasons.

Flights and cars for a winter week

You have good choices in winter, and the schedule has grown for 2027. As scheduled when we checked on October 12, 2026, United flies a Saturday nonstop from Newark that leaves at 9:03 am and lands at 1:20 pm, running from October 31, 2026, through the summer of 2027, the first New York-area nonstop to the island in about three decades. American flies from Charlotte most days of the week all winter and daily from February 11, and from Miami twice a day through February 10. Delta flies daily from Atlanta from December 19 to April 10, and JetBlue flies a daily round trip from San Juan.

Read the table with your start date in mind. A family in the New York area can drive to Newark on a Saturday morning and be at the villa by mid-afternoon, with time for a swim before dinner. Families in Charlotte, Raleigh and much of the Southeast fly American, and families anywhere else usually connect once through Charlotte, Atlanta or Miami. American's Saturday nonstop from Chicago O'Hare returns on February 13, in time for the February break weeks; for a January week, a Chicago group connects once, usually in Charlotte or Miami.

Our getting here page keeps every route current, and there are city pages for New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, Philadelphia and Minneapolis. Schedules shift a little by season, so check the airline's site when you book, and choose your Saturday seats the day you confirm the house.

Once you land, St. Croix is best explored by car. The drive from the airport to the villa takes about half an hour, along the south shore and then east. You drive on the left, in the same American cars you know, with speed limits of 20 mph in town and 35 mph on most other roads, and a U.S. license is all you need. A Saturday-afternoon arrival means the drive is in good light. Our driving guide covers the roads by name, and the car rental directory lists every company we verified, including the ones that deliver to the villa.

The villa's managers meet you at the house for a guided arrival and a full tour. Check-in is at 4 pm, and a Newark arrival leaves time for a stop at a grocery store on the way; the concierge can also stock the kitchen before you land. On the last morning you have until 10 am for a final swim and a long breakfast.

The first week of January

The first days of January belong to the end of the Christmas season. The Crucian Christmas Festival runs through the Children's Parade on January 1 and the Adults' Parade and fireworks in Frederiksted on January 2, and Three Kings Day on Wednesday, January 6, is a legal holiday that closes the season. Our festival guide and the Christmas and New Year's guide cover those days in full, and a family that lands on Saturday, January 2, can still catch the end of the festival.

The days after Three Kings Day are among the best of the year. The island's own families go back to work, most schools at home are back in session, and the beaches return to their winter calm. The restaurants, boat trips and galleries run their full schedules, the harbor in Christiansted is pleasant to walk, and the sea is a comfortable 78 to 80°F. The new moon on January 7 gives the first dark nights of the year for the stars and the bioluminescent bay.

That makes the week of January 9 to 16 a good choice for a family that wants a quiet first week of the year, a couple traveling with friends, or a group of adults who plan to snorkel, dive, hike and eat well. Delta from Atlanta and the Miami flights run daily, and the Saturday United flight from Newark keeps its schedule all winter, so arrival and departure on a Saturday are easy from nearly everywhere.

Agrifest and the farm stands

The one scheduled event of the winter that brings the whole island together is Agrifest, the Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair. It fills the Department of Agriculture's grounds at Estate Lower Love, in the middle of the island, every Presidents' Day weekend, and it has run there since 1971. In 2026 it ran from Saturday, February 14, to Monday, February 16, from 9 am to 6 pm. For 2027 the dates are listed as February 13 to 15, the first three days of a Saturday-to-Saturday week that includes Presidents' Day, and the Department of Agriculture usually posts the hours and the gate price in late January.

It is a working agricultural fair with a party built around it. Farmers show cattle and sheep bred on the island, the youth exhibits and produce competitions are judged, and the food booths serve kallaloo, roast pork and pates, with fresh juices, tarts and Vienna cake. Steel orchestras, quelbe scratch bands and mocko jumbies work the stage, and the crowd is the whole territory, together with exhibitors from other Caribbean islands. Our Agrifest guide has the history and the plan for the day.

Go on the Saturday or Sunday morning, when the lines at the food booths are short and the produce tables are full. A canvas tote is useful for the seedlings, hot sauce, jams and fruit that come home from the plant and produce booths, and children are welcome: the animals, the youth exhibits and the stage acts keep a family busy for a morning.

The rest of the year, the farms sell at the island's Saturday market, which the next chapter covers, and our Agrifest guide lists the farms you can visit the other 51 weeks. The provisioning directory lists the grocery stores for a first stop.

The Crucian table in winter

A winter week is a good time to learn the island's food. The signature is kallaloo, a thick stew of spinach or other greens and okra, cooked down with onion, thyme, salted meat and fish, often with crab, and served over fungi, a cornmeal-and-okra side that is the island's everyday starch. Pates, pronounced PAH-tays, are fried turnovers filled with beef, chicken, conch or saltfish, eaten hot from a roadside stand or a festival stall. Johnnycakes, round fried breads, come with breakfast and with fish.

Two places give a first taste. La Reine Chicken Shack, mid-island in Estate La Reine off Centerline Road, cooks coal-fired chicken and ribs, conch and fish, a whole roasted pig on Saturdays and some of the island's best-known johnnycakes, and it was open from 11 am to 7 or 8 pm as of 2026. Singh's Fast Food on King Street in Christiansted is the long-running roti and curry counter, and a quick call ahead is a good idea. Bring a few bills to both.

A Saturday morning market is the best single stop for a visitor. The Department of Agriculture's farmers market was long held at La Reine and, as of 2026, is listed at the Agriculture Fairgrounds on Industrial Road in Christiansted on Saturdays from 6:30 to 11 am, so confirm the address before you go. On the East End, the Southgate Corner farmers market on East End Road is listed on Saturdays from 9 am to noon, or until supplies last. Go early, since the best produce is gone by late morning, and bring a bag and some cash. Stalls sell seasonal fruit and vegetables, herbs, honey, plants, baked goods, bottled bush tea, dried sorrel and fresh fish, and a cooler in the back of the rental car carries the morning's shopping, papayas and limes, thyme and sweet potatoes, home to the villa kitchen.

Our Crucian food guide covers the dishes and where to eat them, and the journal entry on the kitchen shows how a group can cook at the villa. For a private chef, the catering and private chef directory lists the people we verified.

Mornings on the veranda

The villa faces east, and in January the sun comes up over the water at about 6:50 am. The arched veranda catches the first light, and breakfast there is an easy way to start the day. By mid-February the sunrise is a few minutes earlier, about 6:45, and the light crosses the pool before the day has warmed.

“Great property with a super private location. The sunrises are incredible.”

Suzanne Temple, a guest in March 2026

Breakfast on the veranda is the winter routine, and the island's flavors make it easy to shop for: papaya and passion fruit, johnnycakes, guava jam and strong coffee. A private chef can cook breakfast for the group on any morning, and the concierge can stock the pantry before you land. On a still morning, the sound from the veranda is the surf on the reef.

For a bigger sunrise, early risers can drive to Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States, about ten minutes from the villa. First light comes 20 to 25 minutes before the sun itself, so arrive 30 to 45 minutes early, with a jacket for the headland and a thermos from the kitchen. The Millennium Monument, a sundial, stands on the point, and the bays of the Jack and Isaac Bay preserve lie below it. Everyone else can sleep in and have the pool to themselves. Our Point Udall guide has a sunrise table for the whole year, and the sunrise journal entry describes a morning there.

Snorkeling and diving in the winter sea

The sea sits at a gentle 78 to 80°F in January and February, warmer than any New England beach in August, and the reef keeps the shallows calm. The villa's beach, at the bottom of the property below the pool deck, has direct water access and a reef offshore that takes the energy out of the waves, so the shallow water in front of the house is the place to start. A long-sleeve rash guard is handy for a long snorkel and does double duty as sun protection.

“Pure perfection. A gorgeous home right on the ocean, amazing snorkeling right in front of the house in the shallow water protected by the reef.”

Emily, a guest in April 2026

The best hours are the morning ones. The wind builds through the late morning, so the water is flattest and the light clearest at breakfast time, and the usual rhythm is a swim and a snorkel before breakfast, a second session mid-morning, and the pool after lunch. On the freshest days the reef in front of the house still protects the shallow water, and our East End beaches guide shows which coves shelter from which direction.

A pair of water shoes each, children included, makes the short rocky stretch before the sand an easy walk, and they are good for the East End trails too. Pack a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide: the Virgin Islands ban sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene to protect the reef you will be swimming over. For ideas beyond the villa's reef, see snorkeling off the beach, snorkeling spots on St. Croix and the private beach page.

For the divers in the group, St. Croix is the serious dive island of the Virgin Islands, and our dive-week plan covers January through March. The north shore has the wall at Cane Bay, which begins 100 to 200 yards off the beach at about 40 feet, and the west end has the Frederiksted Pier, among the best-known macro and night dives in the Caribbean. Five dive shops were running trips when we checked in October 2026, and a group with divers and non-divers can share the same villa and the same schedule.

Divers leave for a morning boat and are back for lunch, and the people who stay behind have a reef at the bottom of the steps, a pool and a private chef. A rest day in the middle of the week fits the surface interval, and a Buck Island snorkel day brings everyone together. Our dive week guide plans the whole thing, day by day, with the shops, the refreshers and the last dive before the flight home, and the guide to diving the wall explains the geography. The scuba directory lists every operator we verified.

A boat day to Buck Island

Buck Island Reef National Monument is the island's most famous outing: a protected island and reef a few miles off Christiansted, with an underwater snorkel trail marked by the National Park Service, a long white beach and a short hike to a lookout. The National Park Service lists the monument open every day of the year, and licensed boat operators such as Big Beard's and Caribbean Sea Adventures run half-day and full-day trips from Christiansted and from the marina at Green Cay, about ten minutes from the villa.

The morning boat is the one to book. The crossing is gentlest early, the trail is clearest before the wind builds, and the beach is quiet. Bring a rash guard, water shoes, a towel and a dry bag; if anyone in the family is sensitive on boats, a motion tablet before you board keeps the day easy.

A Buck Island morning

  1. Book the boat when you book the villa and pick the morning departure.
  2. Check in at the dock about 30 minutes before departure.
  3. Snorkel the marked trail first, while the water is flattest.
  4. Eat the picnic lunch on the beach under the trees.
  5. Be back at the villa by mid-afternoon for the pool and a nap.

Our Buck Island guide lists the operators we verified and what each trip includes, and the journal entry Buck Island, a must-visit describes the day from the water.

Whales offshore

Winter is the season of the humpback whale in the Caribbean. The animals spend the summer feeding in the cold waters of the North Atlantic and travel south in the winter to mate and calve, and the Virgin Islands lie in the path of that migration. In the territory's waters the prime months for sightings are February and March, with whales still passing through in April, so a February week is well timed.

A sighting here is a bonus rather than a booked trip, and a few places raise the odds. Keep binoculars on the veranda at sunrise, watch from the boat on a Buck Island morning, or find a high point facing open water on a calm day, and look for the blow, a puff of mist that hangs over the water, and then for the dark back rolling up behind it. We could not find a company that runs regular whale-watching trips from St. Croix as of 2026, so sightings come with the boat days you already plan.

The rules are simple. Federal guidance, from NOAA Fisheries, is to stay at least 100 yards from a large whale, by sea or from land, and to let any animal that comes near you go on its way. For more about the island's wildlife, our wildlife guide covers whales, turtles, birds and the rest.

Hiking the East End on a cool morning

January and February are the best months for a hike. The mornings are in the low 70s, the breeze is steady, and the East End's hills are at their most comfortable. Two trails start within minutes of the villa. The trail into the Jack and Isaac Bay Preserve, 300 acres protected by The Nature Conservancy since 1999, is about a five-minute drive from the villa and takes between 10 and 40 minutes each way, depending on how far you walk, and it leads to beaches that no road reaches. The Goat Hill climb, about two miles round trip, rises to a 672-foot summit with a view in every direction.

Go in the cool morning hours, around 7 am, with two liters of water each, a hat, closed shoes and mineral sunscreen, since the trails have little shade. The swim at the bottom is the reward, and the climb back is at your own pace. A hike to Isaac Bay with a snorkel in the backpack, a long swim and a picnic is one of the best mornings of a winter week.

Our East End hiking guide has the trails, the distances and the marine park rules, the journal entry on the hike to Jack and Isaac Bay follows one morning from the trailhead, and top hikes on St. Croix covers the rest of the island.

A day on the north shore and the west end

One day of a winter week is worth giving to the other side of the island. Give it to the north shore and the west end, a 45- to 50-minute drive from the villa, in the order that suits the sun: the north shore in the morning, the west end in the afternoon, and sunset in Frederiksted. The villa faces sunrise, and Frederiksted is where the island's sun goes down over open sea.

The first stop is Cane Bay, on the north shore about 45 minutes from the villa. It is a long beach with the classic shore dive, where the wall begins 100 to 200 yards out, and with lunch on the sand at The Landing, closed on Tuesdays as of 2026. Cane Bay is a beautiful snorkel on a calm morning, the dive shop across the road will tell you how the sea looks, and on livelier days the west end beaches, on the island's leeward side, are the gentle choice for small children.

From there the road leads west to Frederiksted, about 50 minutes from the villa. The town was laid out in 1751 on a Danish grid and is known as Freedom City, for the emancipation proclaimed from Fort Frederik on July 3, 1848. Fort Frederik and its museum are open Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4 pm and Saturday 1 to 4 pm as of 2026, and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street is free and open Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm. The pier, 1,526 feet long, is the town's walk, and the beach bars on the waterfront are the place to watch the sunset.

On the third Friday of the month, Rhythms at Sunset adds live music on the Frederiksted waterfront, and a west-end day on January 15 or February 19 can end with it. Our Cane Bay guide, Frederiksted town guide and pier guide cover the stops, and the west end beaches guide shows where to swim.

Rum and the sugar mills

Two stops near Frederiksted turn the west-end day into a lesson in the island's history, with a tasting at the end of one. The Cruzan Rum distillery sits at Estate Diamond, about 45 to 50 minutes from the villa. Its label dates from 1934 and a mill has stood on the site since 1760, and the guided tour of about an hour ends with a tasting of up to four rums and two mixed drinks. Tours returned on March 11, 2024, after a four-year pause, and as of 2026 you book online at cruzanrum.com; the distillery does not take walk-ins. It lists its hours as Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 4 pm, and is closed on Sundays and major holidays.

Adults pay about $25 and children about $10, so confirm the price when you book. Children are welcome and get juice or soft drinks at the tasting bar, and the drinking age in the Virgin Islands is 18. Island sources list weekday tour times at noon, 1:30 and 3 pm, which fit neatly between a morning at Cane Bay and sunset in Frederiksted.

The second stop is Estate Whim, a museum run by the St. Croix Landmarks Society at 52 Estate Whim on Centerline Road. The grounds, the sugar-factory ruins, the reconstructed windmill and the exhibit halls are open, and the great house is seen from the outside. As of 2026 it lists Wednesday to Saturday and cruise-ship days, 10 am to 3 pm, with admission of about $10 for adults and $5 for children from 6 to 12, so call (340) 772-0598 before you drive out. St. Croix grew sugar cane until 1966, when the last crop was processed at the Bethlehem factory in the middle of the island, and well over a hundred mill towers still stand across the countryside.

Our Cruzan rum guide tells the distillery's story and lists the island's other spirits, and the guide to the sugar plantations and Estate Whim explains how the mills worked. The rum directory lists every distillery and tasting room we verified.

Christiansted, the fort and the boardwalk

Christiansted is the island's harbor town and the nearest to the villa, 15 to 20 minutes away, and it rewards a morning. The town was founded on September 1, 1734, and the National Park Service looks after the heart of it, the Christiansted National Historic Site. Fort Christiansvaern, built between 1738 and 1749, is the anchor of the visit, and as of 2026 it is open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Entry is $10 for adults 16 and over and free for children under 16, the ticket is good for three days, and the interagency passes cover it.

Around the fort sit the Scale House and the Custom House on the wharf, the Steeple Building of 1753, the island's first Danish Lutheran church, which visitors see from the outside, and Government House on King Street, the governor's working office and residence. A focused visit takes two to three hours, with lunch on the boardwalk making it a comfortable half day. Because the town is so close, most villa guests see it in two or three shorter visits: a fort morning, a provisioning run and an evening at the galleries.

Parking is easy once you know the options. The government lot near King Cross Street and Strand Street runs about $1 an hour or $5 a day and is open from about 7:30 am to 6 pm, the National Park Service lot beside the fort allows two hours, and a small free lot on Prince Street sits across from the seaplane terminal at the west end of town. The seaplane flies from the harbor to St. Thomas in about 25 minutes, which makes a day in Charlotte Amalie an easy add-on for a group that wants a change of scene.

The Christiansted town guide has the hours, the fees and the walking route, and the culture and history directory lists the island's museums and sites.

Stars and the new-moon nights

The East End has no town and few streetlights, and the winter air is clear. The new moons of January 7 and February 6 give the darkest nights of the season, and the sky from the pool deck is a long way from a city sky: the winter constellations stand high in the evening, and on a dark night a faint band of the Milky Way crosses the sky. Orion is the one to find first, rising in the east after dark with the three stars of its belt in a line.

The new moon is also the night for the bioluminescent bay. Salt River Bay, about 35 minutes from the villa, is one of only about fourteen bioluminescent bays in the world and one of seven in the Caribbean that glow year-round. Guided kayak tours run about two hours and cost around $50 to $70 a person, and the glow shows best from the new moon and the nights either side of it, and in the two weeks after the full moon, when the moon rises late. In 2027 that means the nights around January 7 and February 6, and the two weeks after the full moons of January 22 and February 20.

The evening sky has company in these two months. Saturn stands high in the western sky after sunset, and Jupiter rises in Leo in the early evening and reaches opposition on the night of February 10, when it shines all night. Mars rises in Leo a little later and comes to opposition about February 19. The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks around January 3 and 4, and from St. Croix the best viewing is in the hours before dawn on January 4, when the moon is a thin crescent that rises late.

The Cerulean's terrace is the best place to start, with a blanket, a lounger and a hot drink. A free app on a phone will name the stars and planets overhead, and a pair of binoculars shows the star clusters of the winter sky. Our bio bay guide covers the operators and the moon math, and the photography spots guide has the best places to shoot a night sky.

Evenings at the villa and in town

Winter evenings are a few degrees cooler, which is exactly what a fire pit wants. The pit on the villa's terrace is lit after dinner, and a family with children can toast marshmallows while the adults sit with a drink. Quiet is part of the winter evening, and a guest who stayed in February 2026 wrote:

“The beachfront area was perfect to sit and listen to the waves, and the house gave everyone their own space and bathrooms.”

Lisa Jeff, a guest in February 2026

On the nights you go out, Christiansted is 15 to 20 minutes away, and the harbor town has most of the island's restaurants and bars along the boardwalk and the streets behind it. Dinner by the water, a walk past the yellow walls of Fort Christiansvaern, and a drink on the boardwalk make an easy evening. Our restaurant directory and bars and nightlife directory list what we verified, and the journal entry on Christiansted tells the town's story.

Nights at home are easy too. A private chef can cook dinner at the villa, a bartender can run the evening, and the outdoor kitchen and gas grill suit a group that prefers to cook. The private chef directory lists the people we know.

DANISH WEST INDIA & GUINEA COMPANY WAREHOUSE

Two monthly events give a winter week an evening plan in town. Art Thursday is a free gallery walk in downtown Christiansted, held on the third Thursday of each month from November to May, from 5 to 8 pm. The local galleries, jewelry studios and fine shops stay open late, the restaurants and the open-air bars along the boardwalk are lively, and the whole waterfront turns into a slow evening stroll. In 2027 the dates are Thursday, January 21, and Thursday, February 18.

Arrive in the late afternoon, park by the harbor and stroll the galleries before dinner. The shops and galleries are within a few blocks of each other, so a family can see a good part of the town in an evening, and the fort and the boardwalk are close at hand. Art Thursday is a popular night out, so a dinner reservation makes the evening easy.

Rhythms at Sunset is the west end's counterpart, a music evening on the Frederiksted waterfront on the third Friday of the month, put on by Our Town Frederiksted. The listed dates are Friday, January 15, and Friday, February 19, and the season runs from October through July. The music runs into the evening, and the organizers can confirm the end time. Frederiksted is about 50 minutes from the villa, so most guests pair it with a west-end afternoon, as described above, and drive back after the music.

Our Christiansted town guide covers the fort, the boardwalk and the streets behind it, with parking and hours, and the Frederiksted town guide does the same for the west end.

Slow days at the villa

A winter week usually includes one or two days that never leave the property, and the villa is built for them. The pool and its deck sit above the sea with sun loungers and covered seating, the outdoor kitchen and gas grill make lunch easy, and the beach is a short walk down for a swim whenever the mood strikes. A paperback, a nap and a long afternoon on the deck are the point.

The concierge can add comfort to those days. In-villa massage, yoga and beauty services are arranged by appointment, a private chef can cook lunch or a dinner, a bartender can set up the pool deck, and housekeeping can come daily or midweek. For a group that wants something more active nearby, The Reef Golf Course, nine holes over Teague Bay with fescue-lined fairways, is an easy round close to the villa on the East End.

Our guide for a slow day collects the museums, the galleries and the covered places in Christiansted for the afternoon a family wants some shade, and the journal entry on a day by the pool describes a day at the villa from first coffee to last light. The spa and wellness directory and golf directory list the island's options beyond the villa.

Presidents' Day week and the school calendars

Presidents' Day is Monday, February 15, 2027, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 18. Of the twelve big-city districts we checked on their own calendars, all close on both days except Milwaukee, which keeps Presidents' Day as a school day and takes Monday, February 22, instead. Three take the whole week of February 15 to 19: New York City, Boston and Detroit. Several others turn the holiday into a four-day weekend with a staff day on the Friday before.

For St. Croix, the week of February 13 to 20 is the big one for New York City, Boston and Detroit families, and it lines up with the island's own weekend: Agrifest fills the first three days, American's Saturday nonstop from Chicago returns on February 13, and the full moon on February 20 gives moonlit evenings on the terrace at the end of the week. The best nights for the bio bay are the new-moon weeks, so the Presidents' Day week suits beach days, boat days and long dinners.

A four-day weekend works as a short trip, too. Washington, Minneapolis and Cleveland families can connect through Charlotte, Atlanta or Miami, which fly most days, and the villa's managers can say which shorter stays are open. Families on a different calendar have good options either side: the week of January 16 has the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, and the week of February 6 has the new moon on February 6 and the first whales of the season. Hartford closes on Wednesday, January 6, for Three Kings Day, the same holiday the island keeps.

Valentine's Day on a Sunday

Valentine's Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, in the middle of the Presidents' Day weekend. A couple that arrives on Saturday, February 13, has the whole weekend to settle in, and sunset that evening is at about 6:20 pm, an easy hour for a table for two on the terrace with the sea turning pink in front of it. The Cerulean sleeps twelve, so a couple, or two couples traveling together, have the whole house, the terrace and the beach to themselves, and a villa with five bedrooms and a private beach is a different kind of quiet from a hotel.

The simplest romantic dinner is the one the villa makes possible. A private chef can cook a tasting menu on the terrace, a bartender can handle the evening, and the outdoor kitchen, the pool deck and the fire pit give the group a choice of settings. If you would rather go out, reserve ahead for the holiday weekend. Our romantic St. Croix guide covers the island's quieter places for two, from a sunrise at Point Udall to a table in Christiansted. For something livelier, the largest Jump Up street party in Christiansted is held in February near Valentine's Day; the 2027 date has not been announced, and our Jump Up guide explains the pattern.

The weekend suits friends as well. Two or three couples can take the villa for the week, share the cost, and split the days: a couple of boat mornings, a long lunch, a night out in Christiansted and a chef's dinner at home. Every pair has its own room and its own bathroom, with the cottage as a quiet retreat for anyone who wants the most privacy.

A month at the villa

Some winter guests stay longer than a week, and the villa welcomes long stays. The amenities suit them: high-speed Wi-Fi, a chef's kitchen with a full-size range and a dishwasher, a washer and dryer in the main house and a second in the cottage bedroom, air conditioning in every room and a gated driveway with free parking. A person who works remotely can open a laptop on the veranda at eight, finish at five and be in the water by 5:15, with a sunset still ahead.

“Completely renovated inside and out with the best-stocked kitchen we've ever had in a rented house. High point is the pool deck area. Unbelievable views.”

Timothy Moran, a guest in March 2026

A long stay settles into a pattern: a swim and a snorkel at first light, work from the veranda or the cottage through the morning, lunch from the kitchen, a hike or a boat trip on a Saturday and an evening in Christiansted once a week. The cottage, which is always part of the booking, makes a quiet second workspace, and the concierge can arrange housekeeping on the schedule you choose, a stocked pantry before you arrive and a chef for an occasional dinner.

The island's calendar gives a month its landmarks: Art Thursday on the third Thursday, Agrifest on Presidents' Day weekend, the new-moon nights for the stars and the bio bay, and the whale season that begins in February. A monthly stay lets you do all of them without hurrying, with the island's towns, farms, beaches and trails within easy reach of the villa.

The villa's own pages show the spaces a long stay uses most: the chef's kitchen, the pool and deck and the guest cottage. Our concierge page lists what the villa's team can arrange.

Who sleeps where

The Cerulean sleeps twelve across two buildings, and the bedroom plan is the first decision a group makes. The main house has four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, three opening straight onto the sea, around one open kitchen, great room and dining table. The guest cottage, a few steps away, is a small house of its own with a kitchen, a living room, a full bathroom and a bedroom, and a spiral stair climbs to a loft with the sixth bed. The cottage always comes with the booking, and the whole property is yours.

A winter group usually sorts itself in one of three ways. A multi-generational family puts the grandparents in a main-house bedroom or in the cottage bedroom on the ground floor, the parents in the other main-house rooms and the teenagers in the loft. Two or three couples traveling together take a main-house room each, and the older children take the cottage. A work group or a group of friends splits the main house by pairs and uses the cottage as a quiet room for early risers or late workers. Use the planner below to try the options and copy the plan to the group chat.

The bedrooms page shows each room, and the virtual tour lets the whole group walk through the house before anyone commits. Winter stays are a week or more, arriving from 4 pm and leaving by 10 am, and the house is pet-free and smoke-free.

Packing for January and February

The packing list for a winter week is shorter than the one for a summer week. Days are in the mid-80s, so the core of the bag is swimwear, long-sleeve rash guards, linen or cotton shirts, shorts, a wide-brim hat and sandals. Add one thin cardigan or a wrap for the evenings, and people who run cool pack a light jacket for sunrise at Point Udall and the boat crossing.

Three items do the most work. Water shoes make the villa's entry and the East End trails comfortable. Mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is the kind to bring, since the Virgin Islands ban sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene to protect the reef. And a snorkel mask that fits makes a big difference, so bring your own if you have one, along with a small dry bag for boat days.

Documents are easy. Adults bring the photo ID they use for any domestic flight, a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another ID that TSA accepts, and U.S. citizens do not need a passport. Before the flight home there is a customs and agriculture check, so plan to be at the airport about two hours ahead, and the Virgin Islands tourism department asks travelers to be ready to show evidence of citizenship, such as a photo ID and, for children, a birth certificate. Our packing guide goes through the full list, and the no-passport guide covers the rules for entering and leaving.

A winter week, Saturday to Saturday

Here is how a seven-night January or February week can run for a group of mixed ages. Treat it as a shape to bend around the wind, the moon and the youngest traveler's nap.

  1. SaturdayLand, collect the cars, villa tour, a swim
  2. SundayBeach, pool and the reef out front
  3. MondayBuck Island by the morning boat
  4. TuesdayHike to Isaac Bay in the cool morning, Christiansted for lunch
  5. WednesdayFree day at the villa, stars from the terrace at night
  6. ThursdayNorth shore and the west end, or a slow day and Art Thursday
  7. FridaySunrise at Point Udall and a chef's dinner
  8. SaturdayCheckout at 10 am and the flight home

Saturday

Land on a Saturday nonstop or a connection, collect the cars and drive east, about half an hour, keeping left. The villa's managers meet you for a guided arrival and a tour. A swim in the pool, an easy dinner from the stocked kitchen and an early night.

Sunday

The villa's beach and pool all day. Snorkel the reef in front of the house before breakfast, while the water is flattest, and take a long lunch under the covered seating.

Monday

Buck Island. Book the morning boat from Christiansted or Green Cay, snorkel the underwater trail, picnic on the beach and be back at the villa by mid-afternoon.

Tuesday

The hikers walk to Isaac Bay in the cool morning, from a trailhead five minutes from the villa. Everyone else sleeps in, and the group meets in Christiansted for lunch, the fort and the boardwalk.

Wednesday

A rest day at the villa, with the stars from the terrace at night. In a new-moon week, add a kayak tour on the bio bay at Salt River, about 35 minutes away.

Thursday

The north shore and the west end: Cane Bay for a reef snorkel, Frederiksted for the pier and the fort. On the third Thursday of the month, make it a slow day at the villa instead and walk Christiansted for Art Thursday in the evening.

Friday

Sunrise at Point Udall for the early risers, then a slow last day: the beach, a long lunch and a private chef for the final dinner by the fire pit.

Saturday

Checkout is at 10 am. Be at the airport about two hours before the flight for the customs and agriculture check on the way out.

Choosing your week

Villa weeks run Saturday to Saturday, so a winter plan is really a choice among eight weeks. Here is how they compare in 2027, with the island's calendar, the flights and the moon.

The first of the two lively weeks is Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, January 16 to 18, when schools in every district we checked are closed on Monday. The second and larger is Presidents' Day week, February 13 to 20, the full mid-winter break for New York City, Boston and Detroit. January 9 and February 6 are the quiet weeks with the darkest skies; Presidents' Day week is the lively one, with Agrifest on the first weekend and a full moon at the end. Whichever you choose, reserve the villa, the Saturday flights and the cars in one sitting.

The calendar below puts the whole season together. Pick your arrival and departure dates and it marks what falls inside your stay. Agrifest's 2027 dates are listed but not yet announced by the fair, so they are marked that way; check them in late January.

Questions people ask

What is the weather like on St. Croix in January and February?

Days average about 84°F and nights about 71°F, according to NOAA's long-term normals for the airport. January is the clearest month of the year and February the driest. The sea is about 78 to 80°F, the trade wind blows most days, and a light cotton layer is plenty for the evenings.

Which airlines fly nonstop to St. Croix in winter?

As scheduled in October 2026, United flies from Newark on Saturdays, American from Charlotte and Miami, Delta from Atlanta daily and JetBlue from San Juan daily. American's Chicago nonstop returns on Saturdays from February 13. Schedules change a little by season, so confirm the flights on the airline's own site when you book.

Which weeks are the most popular in January and February?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, January 16 to 18, and Presidents' Day week, February 13 to 20, are the weeks many families plan around, since New York City, Boston and Detroit schools take the whole of the second one off. Reserve the villa, the Saturday flights and the cars together. The weeks of January 9 and February 6 are the quiet ones.

Can you see whales from St. Croix in February?

Sometimes. Humpback whales winter in the Caribbean, and in the Virgin Islands the prime months are February and March, with sightings through April. We could not find a company that runs regular whale-watching trips from St. Croix in 2026, so sightings come on boat days and from high points facing open water. Stay at least 100 yards from any large whale.

Do I need a passport to fly to St. Croix?

No, not for U.S. citizens. The U.S. Virgin Islands are American territory, so a trip there is a domestic flight with the same ID you use at home, a REAL ID-compliant license or another ID that TSA accepts. Children traveling with an adult do not need ID for the flight, but carry a birth certificate for each child for the check before the flight home.

Is the water warm enough for snorkeling in winter?

Yes. The sea runs about 78 to 80°F in January and February, which is comfortable for a long snorkel, and a long-sleeve rash guard adds a little warmth and sun protection. Mornings are the flattest and clearest, since the trade wind builds later in the day, and the reef in front of the villa keeps the shallow water calm.

Can I stay for a month and work from the villa?

Yes. The villa welcomes long stays and has high-speed Wi-Fi, a chef's kitchen, a washer and dryer and air conditioning in every room. Write to the villa's managers at Sterling Point early to confirm open dates for a stay of three weeks or more, and the concierge can arrange provisioning, housekeeping and a rental car for the whole stay.

What should I pack for January and February?

Pack for mid-80s days: swimwear, long-sleeve rash guards, linen or cotton clothes, a wide-brim hat and water shoes. Add one light layer for the evenings. Bring mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, since Virgin Islands law bans sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene. Our packing guide has the full list.

How far is the villa from the airport and the towns?

The villa is about half an hour from the airport on the south shore, 15 to 20 minutes from Christiansted, about five minutes from the Jack and Isaac Bay trailhead and about ten minutes from Point Udall. Salt River Bay is about 35 minutes away, and Cane Bay and Frederiksted are drives of 45 to 50 minutes.
