West End Beaches: Rainbow, Dorsch & Frederiksted's Sunset Sand

The island tilts social as it goes west. The East End gives you privacy; the west end gives you beach bars, jet skis, cruise-day energy, and — because this is the sunset-facing coast — the only St. Croix beaches where the sun actually drops into the sea.

Rainbow Beach

The west's headline beach, just north of Frederiksted: lively white sand, calm water, and the island's busiest beach bar in Rhythms, a toes-in-the-sand institution of roughly thirty years' standing with live music and frozen drinks. West End Water Sports runs the rental hub on the sand — jet skis (guided tours or solo rentals), kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear. Modest reef snorkeling sits right off the beach. This is the beach for the day you want the island turned up.

Dorsch Beach

Ten minutes south and the volume drops to zero: soft white sand shaded by palms and sea grapes along the Sand Castle on the Beach resort, calm swimming over a sandy bottom, and weekday afternoons that feel private. The Beach Side Café at Sand Castle covers lunch steps from the towel.

Frederiksted Beach

Town's own sand, walkable from the pier and the fort. It's known for calm water, easy access, and sea glass — decades of harbor history tumbled smooth; hunting the tide line is half the fun. On cruise-ship days it gets busy, then empties by late afternoon just in time for the west coast's real show.

The sunset logic

St. Croix runs east–west, so only this coast watches the sun meet the water. The itinerary that never fails: a Rainbow Beach afternoon, a shower under the beach bar's rinse, and sunset from the sand or from The Fred's pool bar in town — then the easy drive home across the island in the last light.
