A Morning in Christiansted

St. Croix was Danish before it was American, and nowhere shows it like Christiansted. The old harbor town is about fifteen minutes from the villa and makes an easy half-day.

Start at the fort

You can't miss Fort Christiansvaern — the mustard-yellow fortress on the waterfront, part of the Christiansted National Historic Site run by the National Park Service. It's one of the best-preserved colonial forts in the Caribbean, and the surrounding streets of arcaded, pastel buildings are worth a slow wander.

Walk the boardwalk

The boardwalk runs right along the harbor, lined with restaurants and bars looking out at the boats and the reef beyond. It's the natural place for a long lunch, an afternoon drink, or to book a dive or a Buck Island trip from one of the operators on the water.

Then head home

Christiansted is close enough for dinner and far enough that the East End still feels like its own quiet world. Do your shopping and provisioning runs here — and then drive back to the villa, where the pool and the sunset are waiting.
