The ferry, for the unhurried
The QE IV passenger ferry links Gallows Bay — five minutes from downtown Christiansted — with Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. The crossing runs about 2 hours 10 minutes, costs about $70 one way / $120 round trip, and the recent pattern is an 8 a.m. departure from St. Croix with a 3 p.m. return, no Tuesday service. Check-in closes 15 minutes before departure. It is the budget crossing and the scenic one; with the morning boat over and the afternoon boat back, a St. Thomas day trip works without ever seeing an airport.
On the ground: the left-side rule and the real options
First, the famous quirk: the U.S. Virgin Islands drive on the left — in ordinary left-hand-drive American cars, a habit left over from the Danish era. It feels strange for about twenty minutes, the roads are two-lane and unhurried, and your U.S. license is all you need.
Rental cars
For an East End villa stay a car is the right answer — groceries, beaches and dinners all involve short drives. Avis, Budget and Hertz all operate at Rohlsen alongside local agencies such as Centerline; Budget also keeps counters in Christiansted near the seaplane ramp and in Frederiksted by the pier. Book ahead in winter — the island fleet is finite — and see our car-rental directory for the full list with phone numbers.
Taxis
Taxi vans meet every flight and wait along King Street in Christiansted and at the Frederiksted pier. Rates are set per person by the V.I. Taxi Commission, not metered — agree the total before you ride. Published ballparks run about $15 per person airport to Christiansted and about $10 to Frederiksted, with shared "taxi bus" vans covering the Christiansted–Frederiksted corridor for a few dollars a seat; confirm current rates on the official sheet. Drivers also run island tours by the hour — a good first-day way to learn the roads before you take the wheel.
Buses, and the ride-share question
VITRAN's public buses cross the island for a dollar, roughly every two hours on weekdays — usable, but built for commuters rather than beach days. And to answer the modern question directly: there is no Uber and no Lyft anywhere in the U.S. Virgin Islands. A small local pre-booked service (VI Ubah) fills some of the gap on St. Croix, but the working plan for visitors is a rental car, taxis, or the villa's concierge arranging a driver.
| Way across to St. Thomas | Time | What it costs | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seaborne seaplane (harbor to harbor) | ~25 min | quoted at booking | schedules vary — one aircraft |
| Cape Air / Fly The Whale (airport to airport) | ~25 min | fare varies by day | multiple daily |
| QE IV ferry (Gallows Bay to Charlotte Amalie) | ~2 hr 10 min | about $70 one way | Wed–Mon, 8 a.m. out / 3 p.m. back |
From the villa
The Cerulean sits on the East End, about 25 to 30 minutes east of the airport and fifteen from Christiansted — which puts the seaplane base, the ferry dock and the boardwalk all inside an easy morning. The concierge can line up the rental car before you land, book the crossing for a St. Thomas day, or arrange a driver for a distillery afternoon on the west end. However you come — airline, charter, or floats-first into the harbor — the last leg is a short drive up the sunrise side of the island. Ask us and we will sort the rest.
Questions people ask
Can you charter a plane to St. Croix?
Yes, easily. Bohlke International Aviation is based on the field at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport and has flown charters in the Caribbean since 1959; Tradewind Aviation flies on-demand Pilatus PC-12 charters to St. Croix; and San Juan operators like M&N Aviation position jets and turboprops across in under an hour. Charters are quoted per trip by aircraft and routing, so ask the operator for a quote.
Is there a seaplane to St. Croix?
Yes. Seaborne Airlines flies a De Havilland Twin Otter seaplane between Charlotte Amalie harbor on St. Thomas and the Christiansted Harbor seaplane base on St. Croix — about 25 minutes harbor to harbor. As of 2026 one aircraft flies the route and schedules vary, so check current times before you build a day around it.
How do I get from St. Thomas to St. Croix?
Four ways: Cape Air and Fly The Whale fly airport to airport in about 25 minutes, Seaborne's seaplane crosses harbor to harbor, and the QE IV ferry sails Charlotte Amalie to Gallows Bay in a bit over two hours — about $70 one way, with no Tuesday sailing at last check.
Are there taxis on St. Croix?
Yes — taxi vans meet flights at Rohlsen and wait in both towns, with per-person rates set by the V.I. Taxi Commission rather than meters. Agree the fare before you ride. There is no Uber or Lyft anywhere in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Should I rent a car on St. Croix?
For a villa stay on the East End, yes. Avis, Budget and Hertz all operate at the airport alongside local agencies, a U.S. license is valid, and the one adjustment is driving on the left — in ordinary left-hand-drive American cars. Most guests stop noticing within a day.
What aircraft do the local carriers fly?
Cape Air flies nine-seat Cessna 402Cs and is adding the eleven-seat Tecnam P2012 Traveller; Fly The Whale flies Cessna Grand Caravans; Seaborne's seaplane is a De Havilland Twin Otter on floats; Tradewind charters the Pilatus PC-12; and Bohlke's based fleet includes Citation Bravo light jets and a Mitsubishi MU-2 turboprop.
Can a private jet land at St. Croix?
Yes — Rohlsen's 10,002-foot runway takes anything up to a Boeing 747, and the island is a U.S. port of entry with Customs on the field. Our flying-private guide covers the FBO, distances and which jets go nonstop.
