Rainy Day St. Croix: The Indoor Island (Briefly)

First, the honest forecast: most St. Croix rain is a twenty-minute performance — loud, warm, gone — and the correct response is a covered veranda and a coffee. But the green months occasionally commit to a gray half-day, and the island keeps a respectable indoor bench for exactly then.

The museum mile(s)

Christiansted under rain is arcade country — the colonnaded sidewalks were built for exactly this. Duck through Fort Christiansvaern's barrack rooms, then Apothecary Hall, the 1820s Danish pharmacy preserved down to its bottles — the only one of its kind still in place in this hemisphere. Out west, Fort Frederik's museum carries the 1848 story, and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street runs rotating exhibitions, free, Tuesday–Saturday — the island's best umbrella destination.

Tasting-room weather

Weekday rain is distillery rain: Cruzan's tour and tasting (booked ahead), the Captain Morgan Visitor Center's 1 p.m. tastings, Sion Farm's walk-in breadfruit-vodka bar, and Leatherback Brewing's taproom by the airport. Chain two with lunch between and the sky usually clears before the designated driver's verdict is needed.

Great-house weather

Estate Whim's oval great house was engineered for weather — thick stone, cross-breezes, deep galleries — and touring it in rain adds atmosphere the sunny version lacks. The gift shop's local history shelf restocks the villa's coffee table.

Or: surrender correctly

The villa was built for this too — the covered verandas turn rain into theater, the kitchen was stocked for project cooking, the smart TVs and Wi-Fi hold the teens, and the pool is, after all, already wet. A kallaloo attempt with island ingredients has salvaged more than one gray afternoon into a trip highlight. The sun's usually back before it simmers.
