St. Thomas: the port

The territory's hub: the big airport with the most nonstops, the cruise harbor at Charlotte Amalie, duty-free shopping at density, resorts on postcard bays, and energy closest to "Caribbean city." It's the right island for shopping-forward trips, first-cruise nostalgia, and travelers who want restaurants and nightlife stacked deep. It is also, on ship days, genuinely crowded — that's the price of the hub.

St. John: the park

A ferry hop from St. Thomas, two-thirds national park, zero airport: St. John is hiking trails to famous bays (Trunk Bay's the poster), campgrounds-to-villas lodging, and protected-island calm. The right match for national-park people and honeymooners who pack hiking shoes. The constraint is scale — it's small, reached via St. Thomas, and its fame keeps the marquee beaches busy.

St. Croix: the island that's a place

The biggest of the three (~84 square miles) and the one that runs on its own life rather than the visitor economy: two real historic towns, working distilleries, farm fairs and festivals held for the island's own sake, beaches that empty by comparison, the only walk-in wall dive, the glowing bay, and — with United's new Newark nonstop joining the winter map — increasingly convenient access. Fewer mega-resorts, more culture per mile, and room: this is the island for travelers who'd rather be somewhere than at something.

The verdict grid

Shopping and maximum flight choice: St. Thomas. A national park with your name on it: St. John. History, diving, festivals, empty sand and a twelve-person villa on its own beach: you already know. The good news — it's one territory, and the no-passport math covers all three if you ever island-hop the seaplane.
