1493 at Salt River: Columbus's Only U.S. Landing

Every American schoolchild gets Columbus; almost none get told there is exactly one documented place under the U.S. flag where his expedition actually came ashore. It's on St. Croix — Salt River Bay, a half hour from the villa — and the people already living here met the landing with arrows.

November 14, 1493

On his second voyage, Columbus anchored off St. Croix — the island the Taíno called Ay Ay — and sent a boat crew into Salt River Bay for fresh water. They raided a village and seized captives; a Kalinago canoe met them, and the fight that followed left dead on both sides. Columbus named the headland Cabo de las Flechas — the Cape of the Arrows — and sailed on. It stands among the earliest recorded acts of armed indigenous resistance to Europeans in the Americas, and the bay has carried the weight ever since.

Before the ships

The bay wasn't a waypoint; it was a capital of sorts — centuries of Taíno and Kalinago settlement, including the only known ceremonial ball-court site in the Lesser Antilles, excavated here. Salt River was a center of the world that 1493 interrupted.

The park today

Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve protects 1,015 acres jointly with the territory: the landing site, the archaeology, some of the Virgin Islands' largest mangrove forests, a submarine canyon divers know well, and the bioluminescent bay that glows after dark. Ranger programs and the visitor contact station run seasonally — check NPS pages for current hours — but the bay itself is open to kayaks and quiet all year.

Holding both stories

Salt River asks you to hold two truths at once: a night paddle through living light, and a shoreline where the hemisphere's collision began. Go for the glow; stay long enough to read the plaques. Few places anywhere put 1493 and bioluminescence in the same cove.
