Getting to St. Croix

St. Croix is easier to reach than people expect. Here are the basics worth knowing before you book.

It's U.S. soil

The U.S. Virgin Islands are a United States territory, so U.S. citizens don't need a passport to visit, and the currency is the U.S. dollar. Phones and plugs work the same as on the mainland. It's the Caribbean with none of the international-travel friction.

Getting there

You'll fly into Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) on the south side of the island. There are direct flights from several mainland cities — from Miami it's roughly two and a half hours — and easy connections through San Juan, a short hop away. From the airport, it's a scenic drive out to the East End.

Getting around

Rent a car. The villa sits on the quiet East End, about fifteen minutes from Christiansted, and having your own wheels is how you get to the beaches, the trailheads, and dinner in town. One note that trips people up: in the U.S. Virgin Islands, you drive on the left.

When to come

The classic season runs December through April, when the weather is driest and the days are warm and clear. That's also the busiest stretch, so if your dates are firm, check the villa's calendar early and hold them.
