The Annaly Bay Tide Pools: Earn the Swim

The tide pools at Annaly Bay are the island's most photographed reward and its most misjudged hike. The pictures are real: turquoise pools cupped in black volcanic rock, waves detonating on the outer ledge while you float in the calm behind it. So is the fine print.

The hike, honestly

From the trailhead at the Carambola Beach Resort, the Carambola– Trumbull trail runs about 3.6 miles round trip with roughly 550 feet of climbing — through genuine rainforest shade over the ridge, then down to the wild north coast. It's a real hike, not a stroll: proper shoes (the final rock scramble eats flip-flops), more water than you think, and a start early enough to beat the heat. Allow three to four hours with pool time.

The rule that matters

Go at low tide, on a calm-sea day — only. The pools are protected by a rock ledge that the ocean overtops in swell; in rough conditions people have been swept from these rocks. Check the tide chart and the marine forecast the night before, and if the north shore is up, save it for another day — the pools will still be there, and so will you.

The guided option

Two verified outfits guide the route — BushTribe Eco Adventures and VI Eco Tours — and they earn their fee twice over: they know the conditions call, and they narrate the forest (turpentine trees, hermit crab highways, ruins in the brush) you'd otherwise march straight past. With kids or mixed fitness levels, go guided.

Make a north-shore day of it

You surface from the trail beside Carambola's beach at Davis Bay — swim there, then roll east to Cane Bay for a late lunch at the Landing. The villa's outdoor shower and fire pit close the loop about forty-five minutes later. Tired legs, full camera, zero regrets.
